Historical and geographical analysis network development and city-forming functions medium-sized cities

The article analyzes the role of historical and geographical research in the study of systems of settlement. The author makes retrospective analysis of the functions of medium-sized cities in the Central Russia and attempts to assess the impact of historical factors (path dependency) on the differences in economic specializations of the cities.
