The Jerusalem legacy of the New Testament lectionary

Whereas the Byzantine lectionary was compiled in the 7th century, the Jerusalem lectionary has earlier origins and dates back to the 4th century. The analysis of its liturgical peculiarities, reflected in Armenian, Georgian, Syrian and Latin manuscripts, shows the origin of most of the church feasts and liturgical formations from Easter to Pentecost and Lent. The article presents the history of the formation of the liturgical calendar, both by comparing the elements of the lectionary itself with the events of Church history, and by revealing the regularities in the use of the readings of Holy Scripture during the divine service. One of the central moments in its formation was the creation of the Church of the Resurrection in Jerusalem in 335, which had both Old Testament allusions and liturgical reminiscences.
