Ibn Fadlan's Risalah is one of the best known Islamic sources on Eastern Europe in the tenth century. The Risalah of Ibn Fadlan contains much valuable information on the dress and clothing of the Turkic peoples inhabiting the lands along the Central Asian - middle Volga steppe. The clothing of the local peoples had many differences and similarities. Beard as a part of the external appearance was a sign of a high social status of its owner.
