The article deals with various aspects of urban development of small towns in the south of Western Siberia in the beginning of the XVIII – second half of the XIX century. Kainsk, Mariinsk, Tara, Tukalinsk and Yalutorovsk all had significant differences in their development, and the similarities due to their small size, the district status and geographical location
