On the basis of archival and foreign sources the authors reconstruct the relations between the captured officers of the Great Army and regional (for example, Samara provincial) administrators who carried out rescripts from Saint-Petersburg. In fact, it turns out that the war prisoners were treated well and humanely by the Russian provincial bureaucrats, who were quite educated, by the contrast of poor treatment of prisoners by common people who were illiterate and befuddled by religious propaganda.
