The purpose of the article is to analyze, on the basis of comparative analysis, the socio-economic and political situation of the late IXX early XXI centuries in the Sverdlovsk region and to identify the causes and foundations of the current demographic crisis at the regional level. The research methodology is based on the theory of human potential development based on the sustainable development of socio-economic systems and the preservation of the political system in the country. The method of comparative analysis of the demographic situation in different historical periods, political regimes and socio-economic conditions (late IXX early XXI centuries) was used. Static and bibliometric research methods have revealed the grounds for assessing the current demographic crisis in the region in the context of the socio-political aspect. Research results: the causes and grounds of the modern demographic crisis in the Sverdlovsk region are due to the socio-economic and political events of the last century, as well as the specifics of the demographic development of the industrial region, which is closely related to the formation of the modern borders of the region. Migration, which continued throughout the last century, had a significant impact on the formation of the population of the Sverdlovsk region. The historical, social and economic reasons that influenced the change in the demographic situation are considered. Depopulation of the population in the region has a social character and its further overcoming depends on the resolution of social problems.
