Bactericidal and fungicidal properties of acetylenic quaternary ammonium salts

Disco-diffusion method revealed that monoacetylenic quaternary ammonium salts have weaker but more selective bactericidal and fungicidal activity against Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923, Escherichia coli ATCC 25922, Proteus vulgaris, Proteus mirabilis, Penicillium spp. and Bacillus cereus microorganisms than trioctylmethylammonium iodide and diacetylenic dioctyldi(hept-2-ynyl) ammonium bromide, which do not contain a triple bond. Only trioctyl (hept-2-ynyl) ammonium iodide is active against Saccharomyces cerevisiae.
