The present study provides an axiological characteristics and defines a role of person's appearance in the context of interpersonal relations. The study was carried out on the basis of the results of a sociological survey conducted in Belgorod among three groups of respondents differing in social status and age, namely high school students, university students, the employed. The results indicate that most people find their appearance attractive, which allows them to feel good and be optimistic. The indicator of self-esteem is relatively high for high school and university students, and is lower for the employed. Women criticise themselves more over their own appearance. The majority of the respondents calmly react to negative evaluations from others, however it is important for them who makes evaluation. High school students and women are more sensitive to critical comments regarding their appearance. They also pay more attention to taking care of their appearance and strive to follow fashion trends. Men are more concerned about staying physically fit rather than care about their appearance. Besides, it is more typical of young people to be eager to keep fit, while it is less important for adults.
