The language of history textbooks challenges English language learners

The article focuses on the results of a recent study based on the cooperation of historians, history teachers and functional linguists, which offers teachers certain ways of studying the meaning in texts read by students, and contributes to the development of effective ways of describing history. The study shows that close attention to the language helps students to learn the typical patterns of how history is written, as they learn to study sources and evidence, think about causes and consequences, evaluate value and comprehend the author's point of view. The article talks about a professional development program that promotes understanding of the role of language in teaching and teaching history. A case-study of several participants of this program is presented, demonstrating the use of functional metalanguage for involving students in in-depth reading and discussion of historical texts of higher education.
