The article explores the influence of ideas of the Austrian philosopher of dialogue F. Ebner (1882-1931) on the way Bakhtin’s ideas of Dostoevsky’s creative work presented in his book «Problems of Dostoyevsky’s Art» were forming. Ebner’s paper influenced Bakhtin’s theory of the word complementing a thesis about the hero of an artistic work as an embodiment of spirituality proposed by Bakhtin in «Author and Hero in Aesthetic Activity». A comparison of Ebner’s and Bakhtin’s language theories allows the author to conclude that Bakhtin mainly assimilated Ebner’s ideas about the connection between spiritual realities and the word. This is also proved by an abundance of coincidences in terms in both texts.
