The article analyses literacy schools as sociocultural occurrence. The author considers: social and psychological appearance of teaching, attitude to literacy schools by intelligentsia and official authority, social and educational requirements of peasantry. The author brings to light role people's peasantry's schools in sociocultural evolution of Russian society in the second half of XIX-th - beginning of XX-th century
