Currently, there are two elective subjects in secondary schools of the Russian Federation - FRCSE (Fundamentals of Religious Cultures and Secular Ethics) and FSMCPR (Fundamentals of Spiritual and Moral Culture of the Peoples of Russia). The controversy surrounding these subjects often boils down to the fact that secular secondary schools have disciplines that are essentially religious in nature, and thus can begin planting and educating students in the bosom of the Orthodox Church. In this regard, at the present stage, the experience of the pre-revolutionary school becomes very relevant, requires study and critical thinking. The purpose of the article is to identify and study the objective and subjective problems of religious and moral education, which faced the teacher of the Law of God in the late 19th - early 20th centuries. Based on the methods of historicism, scientific objectivity, as well as the legislation of the Russian Empire and the materials of the all- Russian Catechetic congresses, the author identified two problems of religious and moral education of students...
