В докладе представлены ряд положений данной темы в современной европейской историографии. Рассмотрены свидетельства основных данных письменных источников (Иосифа Флавия, канонических Евангелий и др.) о периоде правления тетрарха Ирода Антипы, его отношении с римскими властями и внутренней религиозной политике. Приведен вывод о правлении тетрарха по результатам систематических исследований Галилеи последних лет: его градостроительная политика в Галилее проводилась не за счет экономической эксплуатации сельских территорий Галилеи, — наоборот, урбанизация могла повлечь за собой экономические выгоды и развитие этих территорий. Как следствие, можно говорить об отсутствии археологических аргументов в пользу гипотезы (базирующейся часто только на свидетельствах письменных источников) о напряженности в социальной ситуации в Галилее времени Антипы (на которое приходится общественное служение Иисуса Христа), что могло, по мнению некоторых экзегетов, в какой-то мере определить нравственное содержание христовой проповеди.
