Representation of neostoic ideas in Ludvig Holberg's novel "Niels Klim's underground travels"

The article presents a philosophical analysis of the satirical novel «Niels Klim’s underground travels» written by the XVIIIth century Danish-Norwegian writer Ludvig Holberg. The analysis reveals the influence of Christian Neostoicism on the ideological content of the novel. The author shows that the philosophical ideas of the novel belong to the spheres of epistemology, existential philosophy, ethics and philosophy of education and constitute a belief system that develops the philosophy of Christian Neostoicism. It is concluded that due to the presence of a fundamental philosophical content Ludvig Holberg’s novel cannot be considered only as a political satirical work, but rather as a philosophical bildungsroman relevant to modern existential and moral problems.
