Educational policy of the foreign religious organizations in late Qing China

The article traces the history of educational institutions organized by foreign missionaries in China in the late XIX and early XX centuries, analyzes the foundations and content of the educational policy of foreign missionary organizations in the country, as well as the reasons for the gradual loss of the leading positions in the academic sphere of China experienced by the missionary educational institutions. The author comes to the conclusion that the system of missionary education created the base for the development of the system of school and university education in China, allowed local administrators to gain necessary experience in regulating academic sphere and introduced many new ideas and achievements of Western science to the Chinese society.
