To explain and correct: seimei as a master of yin and yang in Setsuwa tales

Бесплатный доступ

Human mastery is an important subject matter in medieval Japanese collections of setsuwa tales. Plenty of collections contain special sections for the stories focused on different arts among which we find onmyodo, the way of yin and yang. This set of beliefs and practices represented a significant part of the daily life in Heian Japan. Among the most celebrated onmyoji is the figure of Abe-no Seimei (921-1005). Focusing on the tales that mention Seimei and his miracles, the author makes an attempt to show that they are able to shed light not only on Seimei’s biography and career path but also on the history, cultural scope and meaning of onmyodo itself.
