"Not gilded youth with interest in the eyes": social participation of young citizens through the prism of intergenerational transfer of values

The article is devoted to the discussion of the importance of intergenerational transfer of values in the context of civic practices of young citizens and youth social inclusion. The author analyses the mechanisms and trajectories of intergenerational transfer of values in St. Petersburg families of the urban middle class, whose younger representatives represent themselves as social and civic activists. The theoretical part examines the academic discussion around the concept of "intergenerational transmission of values”, describes the possibilities and limitations of its application in the current perspective, notes the interactive nature of transfer, which determines both generational differences and similarities between generations in the families of a middle class of a large metropolis. The focus of the empirical part is the attitudes and value concepts of the “older” generation in the context of constructing specific generational experience, as well as the realized models of parenting in the context of its transnsfer. In the course of a comparative analysis of interviews with young active citizens and their parents, the features of intrafamily intergenerational interaction and mechanisms of intergenerational ties that contribute to the transfer of values and experience, as well as gaps and "points of conflict" in intergenerational continuity are shown, which determine the specifics of civic participation and social inclusion of youth
