N.M. Karamzin on the "comprehensive plan of the people's doctrine" in Russia

The author analyzes the works of N.M. Karamzin within the period of the «Herald of Europe» (1802-1803), devoted to the evaluation of the reform of public education at the beginning of the XIX century. Several main ideas of the writer are singled out: education of the Russian people, moral education of the society, education of youth, awakening the sense of love for the fatherland, presented in the programmatic articles of Karamzin as the most important problems of our time. On a vast circle of sources it is proved that N.M. Karamzin was a consistent supporter of the idea of public education, although he feLt some hesitation in the matter of the steady progress of human history. The special respect of the Russian historiographer to scientists and teachers is noted, as weLL as the recognition of the exceptional importance of the teacher for the progressive deveLopment of Russia.
