Самоубийство подвержено разнообразным влияниям со стороны факторов окружающей среды. Наиболее ярко это проявляется в неоднократно подтверждённой сезонности суицидального поведения - наличии весенне-летнего и менее выраженного осеннего подъёма. Это явление может быть связано как с биологическими (терморегуляция, инсоляция, продолжительность светового дня), так и с социальными факторами, которые также обычно приурочены к естественной сезонности. Подъёмам суицида сопутствуют (и частично их объясняют) сезонные обострения психических расстройств, агрессивного поведения, психологических состояний, связанных со сменой времён года. Предположение о том, что сезонность суицида будет ослабевать по мере урбанизации, далеко не всегда подтверждается в многолетних наблюдениях. Человек, несмотря на свою власть над природой, по-прежнему, зависит от множества биологических ритмов (циркадианных, инфрадианных и ультрадианных), что отражается в том числе на частоте суицидов в течение каждого месяца, недели и суток. Объективное выявление различных колебаний суицидальности представляет собой непростую статистическую задачу, использование разных методов анализа, различия в выборках и географические вариации приводят к неоднородным результатам. Кроме того, на циклические колебания накладываются эффекты, связанные с апериодическими погодными явлениями и влияниями, обусловленными различными физическими факторами внешней среды как естественными (гелио-геомагнитные возмущения, космическая погода), так и техногенными (искусственные магнитные поля различных характеристик). Не исключено, что одним из провоцирующих факторов может выступать инфразвук, обусловленный экстремальными вариантами погоды. Что касается влияния на частоту суицидов фаз лунного цикла, данные исследований противоречивы. Ряд работ, посвящённых Чернобыльской катастрофе и другим радиационным авариям, свидетельствуют о возрастании частоты суицида вследствие комбинированного воздействия радиации и стресса из-за субъективно воспринимаемой опасности ионизирующей радиации. Другие экологические загрязнения, в том числе смог и деградация окружающей среды в целом сопутствуют повышенным уровням суицида. Предложена обобщающая схема патогенеза циклических и апериодических подъёмов суицидальности под влиянием экологических факторов, использующая в качестве центрального феномена стресс-уязвимость и объясняющая их действие с позиций стрессовых эффектов и обострений хронических соматических заболеваний и психических расстройств.
