Health tourism in the South of Russia has a long tradition based on the natural resource potential of the territories included in the Southern Federal District. Historically, the development of the health resorts of the South of Russia was connected with the beginning of the use of natural medicinal resources for human needs in restoration of health, which has acquired a mass demand. Unfortunately, not all resort areas identified natural resource potential is used in full measure, moreover, some resorts has partially lost its historic value due to various reasons associated with the low level of responsibility of local authorities for the preservation of the resort’s heritage, its development in modern conditions, lack of financial resources. In this regard, the study of the historical background for the development of resort centers of the South of Russia to overcome the existing problems related to the specific socio-economic conditions and management efficiency in the regions interesting is in particular interest. The solution of the difficulties encountered in optimizing the use of the potential of the resorts of the South of Russia acquires relevance in the context of important socio-economic role of cities, which have special natural resource potential and tradition of health tourism for economic growth in conditions of macroeconomic instability. To date, the financial results of sanatorium-resort complex and other accommodation associated with medical and health tourism, are unprofitable, so there is a need for comprehensive solution to change the dynamics of the indicators.
