During the period of the pandemic, the life of society in general and communication between people in particular changed. The restrictions imposed have left an imprint on both business and academic communication and communication with friends and family. In this regard, the following questions arose: how does the use of the language change in these conditions during the now popular online communication? What linguistic means can we use to make online communication as effective as possible? The issues of using linguistic means specifically for the purpose of increasing its effectiveness have not been studied enough. The study of their use can be useful both for understanding the development of the language in general and for solving purely practical problems, for example, improving the quality of online learning. To study linguistic means in online communication in the era of a pandemic, surveys were conducted, as well as video recordings of online seminars, and posts on social networks were analyzed. As for audio and video communication, careful selection and more active use of means of creating expressiveness, primarily lexical, can partly compensate for the lack of personal contact, increased fatigue and the difficulty of concentrating on the subject of discussion that many participants have during online communication. In written communication (forums, social networks, messengers), a thoughtful choice of expressive vocabulary avoids misunderstandings, negative reactions, etc. The study studied the features of communication mainly in Russian, but its results suggest that the same features are characteristic of communication in other languages.
