The article examines the use of the image of a horse as a symbol of revolutionary violence by the Russian symbolist writer Georgy Chulkov. Attention is paid to similarity of interpretation of the image in Chulkov’s and the American romanticist Edgar Poe’s novellas. Chulkov’s novella Red Horse is placed in the general context of the revolutionary theme in the creative work of symbolists in 1910-s - 1920-s.
