Gustav Shpet and Hegel's "Phenomenology of spirit": philosophical and methodological aspects of translation

The article examines the philosophical and methodological aspects of translating philosophical literature using the case of Gustav Shpet’s translation of Hegel’s «The phenomenology of spirit». Referring to archival documents, the author compares the translated text published in 1959 and the handwritten original of 1937 kept in Russian State Library and highlights the specific features of Shpet’s methodological position concerning the translation of philosophical works. It is characterized by the careful selection of contextually determined equivalents for the translated concepts and the focus on the most careful preservation of original syntactic structures and author’s phrases.
