Orphanages in the territory of the Yakut Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic in the 1920s

The paper presents the analysis of the activity of orphanages in Yakutia during the 1920s. The author characterizes main features of the phenomenon of children’s homelessness as it appeared in one of the remote ethnic regions of the Soviet state. Basing on the data of regional archives the author reconstructs the life conditions of the orphans, shows quantitative and qualitative characteristics of the orphanages and names the factors that prevented the effective operation of these institutions.
