Argumentative essay as the means of competency assessment

The article describes theoretical approaches to development of essay writing used in foreign systems of higher education. The authors present the results of the survey concerning the frequency of writing activities in the curriculum. The algorithm of writing an academic essay and criteria for assessment are given.
