This article discusses issues related to correctional work with children who have mental retardation. When performing this activity, various difficulties arise, one of which is the lack of development of uniform principles of diagnosis, as well as different degrees of severity of these deviations. It is known, that children's examinations of a psychiatrist of a preventive nature are carried out at 2 years, 6 and 15 years, which is insufficient. When organizing this form of work, it is a very difficult task to identify children who need comprehensive correction measures, as well as to get an education. In this study, a detailed analytical study is carried out, which examines the development of the physical and mental sphere of primary school students with a diagnosis of mental retardation. When performing the analysis, such indicators were used as the conclusion of the psychological, medical and pedagogical commission; individual program of rehabilitation and habilitation; comparison of anthropometric data of schoolchildren with growth standards; information obtained during the medical examination of students, as well as from the medical records of students. It is assumed, that the materials obtained as a result of the study can serve as a guide for further study of this problem.
